School Uniform and Trends - Research

School Uniform

    In this blog, I want to research the school uniform trend and school uniforms from around the world that can inspire me to design school uniforms.

   P. S. In the United States, school uniform is not required, especially in public schools, but in the USA private schools and other specialised educational institutions have dress codes or uniforms (World Population Review, n.d.).

    

    Trends of School Uniform

Cardigans or Waistcoats

    According to Grynevych (2023) that to make the school uniform looks exciting, especially for teenagers is wearing a cardigan, sweatshirt, or knit waistcoat to get more casual look. Also, can combined with bright or dark colour inside, which is the shirt (Grynevych, 2023).

Suits

    Suits can be worn in the autumn or spring season to keep warm, and they can be worn with pleated skirts and jackets to make them fashionable (Grynevych, 2023).

Sundresses

    

    Grynevych (2023) mentions that the sundress will look amazing with a turtleneck, shirt, or blouse. It is also appealing with a button, a deep neckline, and narrow straps.


    The market for school uniforms has expanded over the years due to changes in fashion trends, the rise in the number of schools implementing uniform regulations, and the demand for affordable clothing (Berugaru, 2024). Berugaru (2024) states, "School uniform is a crucial aspect of the education sector, providing a sense of discipline, identity, and equality among students." To deal with varying weather, especially in Western countries, the school uniform is divided into three, such as summer school uniform, spring/summer uniform, and winter uniform (Berugaru, 2024). Moreover, Berugaru (2024) mentions that uniforms have specific requirements for each institution, which creates demand for suppliers across all education levels.

    Japan

Japan School Uniform

    

    In Japan, the school uniform that they wear are (Betts, 2019):

• Blazer
• Trousers
• Tie
• White Shirt
• Black leather shoes

    Additionally, according to Betts (2019) that uniform for summer and winter:

• Summer - white shirts and shorts/light fabric trousers or pleated skirts for girls
• Winter - sweater, sweater vest, blazer, and longer trousers or skirts.

    South Korea

Korea School Uniform

    In South Korea, the school uniform that they wear are (Betts, 2019):

    

    Girls - 

• Long dress trousers
• White shirt with sleeves and collar
• Pleated skirts
• Tie
• Vest
• Outerwear for winter
• White socks

    Boys - 

• White shirt with sleeves and collar
• Dress trousers
• Vest
• Jacket
• Tie
• Outerwear for winter
• Belt (must wear with trousers)
• White socks

    United Kingdom

United Kingdom School Uniform

    In the United Kingdom, the school uniform that they wear are (Dress Code in the USA and in the UK, n.d.):

• Jumper
• Pants or skirt
• Shirt
• Black shoes
• Tie (sometimes)

    United States

United States School Uniform (private school)

    In the United States, the students who go to private school they wear uniform, which is (Washington Episcopal School, n.d):

• White shirt
• Plaid skirt
• Skirts or chino pants/shorts
• Polo shirt (occasionally)

    This research helps me to give inspiration for designing a school uniform so I can create an exciting design for the students. Due to the project in Connecticut, Cromwell, USA. So that, I will use the standard school uniforms that the USA has, their private school uniform.
