Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban's Costume Designer ~ Jany Tamime - Research
I like her uniform design in 'Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban' because the uniform became the iconic Harry Potter series, and the aim of the movie as the wizardry world succeeded. This design inspired me to make the design of school uniforms, especially the robes. I chose the robes for the uniform because it is authentic and because the target market is children around 10 - 12 years old; they will like to wear school uniforms. Since many students, approximately 44%, do not like to wear school uniforms (Trutex, 2017). Thus, I will likely make the school uniform exciting and magical for students.
Besides, Tamime changed the uniform design from the first and the second of the Harry Potter series. She added colours on the other side of the robes based on the house colour; she also added the hood to the new robes, and she said the colour for the tie was based on the house made from silk (Brannigan, 2018). Brannigan (2018) mentions that Tamime also created a wool sweater, but it turned out "...real wool for the sweater, which was a terrible idea..." because it made an issue while washing the sweaters. According to Portia (2018), in the shift of the robes over the two series before, Tamime changed the material to make it thicker; she also considered the focus on the houses and the uniformity; she also created additional large pockets inside the robes for students to able to carry the wands everywhere. Additionally, the decision to change the new style of the uniform was made by the filmmakers Alfonso Cuarón and Tamine, who wanted to get away from the childish aesthetic from the previous films (Cheeda, 2024). To achieve this, Tamime created sweaters that show collars, hoods on the back of the robes, and colours to show each house that the students belong to; a rebellious atmosphere can be seen in how the students wear uniforms, untucked, depicting the teenager's behaviour (Cheeda, 2024). Moreover, the new uniforms are more vibrant, neat, and extravagant; also, the houses are more noticeable by colour even among the crowd of Hogwarts pupils (Portia, 2018).
Why did I choose Jany Tamime, who designs Harry Potter uniforms, as my inspiration? The reason is that I like how Tamime could make a unique uniform that is still admired by many people now. She successfully depicted the school uniform for wizardry pupils by adding many details to the uniform's design. On the other hand, I will design school uniforms that use suits, but in form like robes; the Hogwarts uniform inspires me to make a unique uniform that will be iconic for a school and make the students feel excited while wearing the uniform.
