Object Lesson - Development Ideas
The object that I picked was a tangled cream rope. This rope I used for my object lesson for developing ideas. I found this rope exciting because of how complicated it was, and it looked hard to make it tidy. I could explore the rope that connected with my subject area in fashion design, such as rolling it up on my hand, body, neck, head, and others. When I started thinking and touching the rope, I got a few ideas toto help my project in Art Portfolio Term 1 about making a 3D design of clothes I wanted to use for a dress, accessories, top, skirt, and more. Moreover, I might use the rope as one of the materials for my 3D design.
After that, I came up with several ideas that the rope could be used for tops, shorts, belts, skirts, and accessories. Also, I wrote that it correlates with the rope and the word that popped into my head when I touched and saw it. This technique made it much easier to generate ideas from one material and give many ideas to make many things. Moreover, breaking down the list of connections of rope also gave me new insight or vision for the purpose of rope, and the rope is a valuable thing.
A fashion designer, Eilish Macintosh, made a dress design using rope as the focus material. She made several designs with ropes. Her designs are not complicated; the designs are just simple and minimalist black dresses wrapped by rope for each dress's accessories, giving a monochrome graphic effect (Howarth, 2013). Also, in the article, Howarth (2013) mentions that Macintosh was telling about she was inspired to make the type of designs that the garments and the textile more inclined to resemble as a jewellery because of photographs by Nobuyoshi Araki and Eduardo Paolozzi sculpture (Howarth, 2013). Furthermore, she achieved an award; "...she was awarded the L'Oreal Bursary Award at the Central Saint Martins MA show by one of the prestigious fashion college's most famous alumni: Christopher Kane." (ELLE UK, 2013). Moreover, these designs were designed for the autumn season in 2013.
