The Collapsible Dress by Sun Woo - Research

Sun Woo is a fashion designer from South Korea. She made a unique dress that she publicised, entitled the Collapsible Dress. This dress aims to emerge from the simple shapes that encircle almost the entire body using ring-shaped accents (Hanh, 2020). Hanh (2020) mentions that Sun Woo made a collection of this style with different dress models and included different colours too; green, orange, red, and more. According to Hanh (2020), the structural strength and lightweight, which can easily move, she has obsession with tents by her since childhood because of social disconnection. The purpose of this dress is to create a comfortable house; "...she was yearning, into a wearable home that she can carry around wherever she goes to shield her from the outside world." (Hanh, 2020).

I like her uncommon design of a dress because she created an eccentric design that is out of the box and makes me attracted to her work. Hanh (2020) mentions that the dress is similar to a pop-up tent, using a material that stretches between poles. According to Hanh (2020), Sun Woo made this dress by using wire with PVC tubes to wrap or create the circle silhouette, and after that she designed a fabric tunnel, was built into each component to make a flexible framework. "Instead of determining the path of the wire in advance via sewing patterns, the designer took a more fluid, iterative approach." (Hanh, 2020). The main focus of her work is the shape of the dress, which is uncommon and exciting to see. Moreover, Sun Woo (no date) quoted in Bardsley (no date) that she usually designs her clothes without sketches because she believes that her work is hard to sketch, so she started by considering the general sentiment and mood that can help her to create the concept of her work, especially her pop-up tent concept.

What made me choose her as my artist that can inspire me? She motivates me to make unique shapes and fashion designs with uncommon materials like tents. Also, she inspired me that it is a fine thing to make the design directly rather than erase and continue drawing, which means getting stuck in that circle; how about creating the designs using my hands directly or in 3 dimensions? It is more productive and helps make the ideas more come up. I can realise this technique using the draping technique I have already learned before. Moreover, I will take the unique shape of her dress as my inspiration to explore my designs, so my fashion designs are attractive and interesting to wear and to see what she created in her designs.

  1. Good, you have understood how you can incorporate her working methods into your own practice. You could also look at how she uses the wire with pvc to make a 3D structure. Does this relate to your work with structure and boning within the corset?
