Sustainabilty or Not? Material That Will Be Used - City Costume

Here, I want to research the potential materials that will be used for the city costume. I think the city costume will not be 100% sustainable, but I will make sure it is still sustainable as a picture of environmental care actions, especially since the city costume will be shown to the world.

I used chiffon for the cascaded red on the part of the skirt. According to Fashinza (2024), chiffon is considered a sustainable fabric because it is made from silk and is an organic and biodegradable material. Nevertheless, that chiffon can be expanded again, but it will not be sustainable because of the variety of non-silk chiffon, such as polyester and nylon chiffon, which has resulted in pollution and waste production (Fashinza, 2024). Therefore, Fashinza (2024) mentions that if chiffon is made of a sustainable material, it will get certification for the evidence.

According to FabCouture (2024), silk habotai is a "...high-quality silk habotai fabric that is both beautiful and sustainable." This means the high-quality silk habotai is considered an environmentally friendly material. That is why I chose silk habotai as my fabric for the dress, either the female adult or the girl dress; it will be used to layer the outside part.

Cotton poplin is a sustainable fabric, mainly from sustainable farms, and is pure (Martiniuc, 2024). Martiniuc (2024) mentions that to further improve the fabric's sustainability qualifications, choose poplin blends made with recycled polyester or other eco-friendly fibres. In addition, "Another aspect of poplin's sustainability is its durability." (Martiniuc, 2024). It means that the longevity of the fabrics can endure frequent wear and washing. So, I used this fabric for the shirt, blouse, and dresses for the inside layer.

Cotton gabardine is not a sustainable fabric. It is not considered an eco-friendly material because the production of gabardine can be pretty harmful; wool that is not organic is dipped in toxic chemicals to keep ticks and lice away; animal excrement toxins contaminate air, water, and soil; high levels of carbon dioxide are released, and this puts a strain on natural resources like land, food, and water (Marie, 2022). This means gabardine production is destructive and is poor for the environment. In addition, according to Marie (2022),  "...gabardine is durable, strong, firm, tough, tightly woven, hard wearing and rain resistant fabric." Therefore, I will use this fabric for the vest and the trousers.

The cotton drill is a sustainable fabric. According to Marie (2022), a Drill is recyclable if it is made of organic cotton because cotton is considered one of the most biodegradable fabrics. Organic cotton is grown without harmful chemicals, pesticides, or insecticides, so it does not contain synthetic chemicals, metals, or genetically engineered substances, and it also requires less water when compared to non-organic cotton (Marie, 2022). I will use this fabric for the robes.

Viscose is considered a sustainable fabric. Raumer (2023) mentions that it is produced from wood pulp that is ethically sourced and has a lower environmental impact because of the sustainable forestry techniques used. I will use this fabric for the turtleneck.
